It lacks the narrative strength of his other novels. There are a couple of good stories here, but they are not the main reason for the book's existence. Docotorow writes that he thinks the novel can do more than any other form of art and he tries to do that here. It is endlessly fascinating, though it doesn't always work. I think I'd have to read it four more times to get all of it.
