The Belief in a Just World: A Fundamental Delusion
Melvin Lerner

Brighton Rock (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

Brighton Rock - Graham Greene, J.M. Coetzee Definitely not his best. There are hints...perhaps even whole chapters of the man to come. But on the whole it's clear that he was still a couple of years away from being the amazing author that we know and love. One major problem is Pinkie, who often comes off as more educated as he should. Rose also feels like she's too dumb to live sometimes. Maybe I can't remember what it's like to be a teen well enough, but these two just seem a little too out there to be believable. The ending is inappropriate too, just like his ending to the Third Man (perhaps the best example of when the movie really is better than the book).
