As I Lay Dying (Modern Library)

As I Lay Dying (Modern Library 100 Best Novels) - E.L. Doctorow, William Faulkner One of the top 2 novels I have ever read. So insanely amazing it's kind of hard to express. It might be the greatest American novel of the 20th century. I can think of things that might be equal, but I can't think of anything better. First of all, it's got all kind of (believable!) alternate POVs. Then, there are the two shocks. The first one tells you what time you are actually dealing with. The second is the twist at the end. This twist is the best twist I have ever experienced. It was like someone tearing my heart out of my chest. It was like living thirty years and then finding out I was adopted. Something like that. And he does it in the last paragraph. I had to reread that paragraph twice. Unbelievable.
